Operations
Every day a great number of employees are engaged in various routine activities for the general benefit of the company they work in. Are all these routine activities still necessary today? When was the last time that these activities were reviewed for potential waste reduction and efficiency improvements? And what are the processes and activities that contribute the most to a company’s current and future success? Are the employees carrying out these activities enabled to do what is expected of them now and in the future?
Carefully mapping critical internal processes and activities in predefined process flows, e.g. from “order received” to “order executed” will reveal valuable points for improvement. By means of interviews and in cooperation with small designated process improvement teams, improvements can be identified, proposed to leadership teams and if agreed upon, implemented and monitored. Using an agreed, structured and well-defined approach and execution, M.A.P. Consultancy can help you improve operations significantly with the cooperation of your employees. Improving efficiency, eliminating waste and at the same time creating the work environment wanted and needed.
Health
All employees must be able to work safely in a healthy work environment. A healthy workplace is one where workers and managers collaborate to continually improve the health, safety and wellbeing of all workers and by doing this, sustain the productivity of the business (World Health Organisation, 2009). Given we spend one third of our lives at work, the working environment can have a significant impact on our health and wellbeing. A healthy working environment is one in which there is not only an absence of harmful conditions that can cause injury and illness, but an abundance of health promoting ones (WHO, 2010).
Workplace health and wellbeing programs consider the impact that the work environment and the specific activities can have on the health of employees. Based upon these premises the programs provide activities or initiatives that are designed to make healthy choices the easy choice for workers. M.A.P. Consultancy can help you to ensure a healthy workplace based upon proper labour policies including risk evaluations. Having implemented these policies and risk evaluations and making sure that they are kept up to date, known and relevant is key in ensuring a proactive approach to protect the health of your employees.
Safety
Safety, from a Seveso perspective, can be defined as the control of recognised hazards in order to achieve an acceptable level of risk. Are the work-related hazards sufficiently recognised and known? Are the identified mitigating measures in place and effective? Is the level of risk acceptable? With regards to safety a proactive approach in managing risks related to the primary processes is essential!
M.A.P. Consultancy can help you reach structural safe operations by carrying out risk reviews, promoting periodic reviews of safety studies with the relevant stakeholders, making hazard awareness part of day to day operations, and having a shared level of risk acceptance throughout the company. Investing in employee safety awareness will lead to the reselience and forsight needed to effectively deal with (unknown) risks.
Security
Al companies have implemented some precautions to guard against crime, attack, sabotage, etc. With regards to security, M.A.P. Consultancy’s area of expertise is ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) related. ISPS applies to vessels doing international voyages which include passenger ships & cargo ships of 500 GT and above.
Following the tragic events of September 11th 2001, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed to develop new measures relating to the security of ships and of port facilities. This led to the creation of the ISPS code. The ISPS code dictates which measures ISPS facilities must have in place to get an ISPS certificate (license to operate). M.A.P. Consultancy can help you with ISPS related matters, such as Port Facility Security Plans, ISPS awareness and ISPS drills.
Environment
The environment is the natural world of land, water, air, plants, and animals. Damage to our environment, e.g. as a result of a company’s activities, must be prevented or minimised. To protect our environment rules and regulations are in place. Adhering to these rules and regulations is compulsory for any organisation. M.A.P. Consultancy can help you identify which rules and regulations apply for your company and assist you (in making gap analyses and action plans) in becoming environmentally compliant.
Compliance
‘Compliance’ means acting in accordance to applicable laws and regulations. When this is the case, you are ‘compliant’. The authorities monitor compliance during (un)announced inspections. When a company is not ‘fully compliant’ sanctions such as fines and penalties can be imposed. In some cases, it can also mean suspension of certain activities, licenses or even closure.
‘Non-compliance’ can lead, among others, to damage to the company’s reputation. To prevent this from happening a proactive approach to compliance is recommended. Creating compliance awareness entails knowing which rules and regulations are applicable to your company, knowing the actual level of compliance to these rules and regulations, a periodic compliance scan, and following up pending items in a compliance action plan. This can prevent unpleasant surprises. M.A.P. Consultancy has extensive knowledge and experience with compliance related matters for Seveso companies and as such can help you improve compliance.
Audits
An audit is a formal examination and verification through investigation. The goal of an audit is to determine if certain aspects of business operations (the audit scope) are in line with internal and or external standards (which can be rules and regulations). An audit helps a company identify what needs to be improved in order to improve business operations and or become compliant. M.A.P. Consultancy is specialised in carrying out Seveso, ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, ADN and ISPS audits and can help you in auditing related matters.
Emergency Response
Being prepared for an emergency helps minimise the potential outcome in lives impacted, damage to the environment and business continuity impact. During emergencies doing the right things, in the correct way, can literally save lives. M.A.P. Consultancy can help in writing, reviewing and practising ERP’s.
General Management
A manager is accountable for ‘managing’ a team, department or company. Managers play a pivotal role in guiding organisations from where they are today, to where they want to be (or to ensure status quo is maintained) in some point in the future. Managing means leading (by example), coaching (talent development) and representing (the interest of all stakeholders). Managers are essential in creating the required safety culture for an organisation to thrive by providing the right environment for their team members to operate in. M.A.P. Consultancy can assist managers to identify and create the right environment.
